Metronet (UK) have been working with construction company Laing O’Rourke for over 8 years now, providing them with temporary wireless connectivity for over 100 construction projects across the North of England.
Laing O’Rourke is a multinational construction company, privately owned it is an internationally focussed engineering enterprise with world class capabilities spanning the entire client value chain.
The business origins stretch from 1848 before the Laing O’Rourke brand was officially established in the UK in 2001. Now a multinational organisation with operations in Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Australia, delivering some of the most iconic constructions in the world.
Their sectors include buildings, transport and power, through to water and utilities as well as mining and natural resources. Some of their notable projects include the, London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, Atlantis The Palm in Dubai and the Manchester Town Hall Complex.
Laing O’Rourke’s day to day construction is never in one place for long. Their main challenge was to deliver IT infrastructures to temporary sites across the UK, this connectivity needed to be flexible and scalable so it could be moved from site to site when needed.
Peter Cardwell, Project Sites IT Team Leader at Laing O’Rourke explained, “We have been finding it increasingly difficult to work within the confines of traditional connectivity providers on our construction sites. We need connectivity to be readily available to us without commitment to long contracts being an issue.”
“I am responsible for delivery of IT infrastructure for all our construction sites in the North, the Midlands and Scotland, we have many projects going on all at the same time so it is essential that the infrastructure does not let us down and delay completion. Fibre may not be an option for some of these sites as there is often too much disruption and we have to commit to a minimum contract length. Smaller construction projects can last from a couple of weeks to just a few months and for these we needed a provider who could deliver fast, flexible connectivity without the contract constraints.”
Due to Metronet (UK)’s alternative wireless technology they can create bespoke circuits to meet the exact connectivity requirements for Laing O’Rourke. Metronet (UK) own their own network entirely so there is no dependency upon traditional fibre networks and connectivity can be delivered much quicker. As soon as Laing O’Rourke are ready Metronet (UK) can get their sites connected for as long as they need on an adaptable contract.
Laing O’Rourke and Metronet (UK) have been working together for over 8 years delivering connectivity to over 100 projects throughout the North of England.
Peter continued, “Metronet (UK) is the clear choice for us in these cases, they can deliver wireless services when fibre isn’t an appropriate solution and they are usually able to deliver it in places where fibre can’t reach. It also really helps that the business understands the regional geography, especially in the North of England.”
Metronet (UK) are able to provide their wireless connectivity with short contract terms completely tailored to the needs of Laing O’Rourke. They can deliver it within the timeframes required and the bandwidth is scalable should anything need to change. This is all delivered with the company’s industry leading 24/7 support.
“The support we have received from Metronet (UK) is brilliant, the team are willing to be flexible and to work out of hours to deliver our solutions as and when we need. There is plenty of engagement offered and available from the whole team, even with our shortest temporary contracts.”
Peter finished, “The round the clock service is unbeatable. The urgency of our projects is always understood and accommodated for. The company really has a can do attitude and are so easy to deal with. We never have to worry about our connectivity services with Metronet (UK).”
