How does it work?

Our wireless connections are serviced by high-rise Point of Presence (PoP) sites that ensure maximum coverage for the urban areas in which our network operates. Connectivity is always reliant upon line of sight from your building to one of our PoPs. We can confirm the feasibility of providing a service by performing a free survey.

We can install the connection in as little as 25 days. On receipt of order, our expert operations team will arrange for the installation to be carried out. A small radio dish will be installed on the exterior of the building; the location will be agreed with the building owner or landlord in advance. From here, the appropriate feeder cables will be run to the IT or Server room, or another location as required. Here, it is presented using an Ethernet RJ45 interface unless otherwise specified.

How does this improve on fibre?

Wireless connections offer all the benefits of fibre – such as low latency and high availability – but there are a host of additional features that make the Metronet (UK) wireless connection more attractive than a standard fibre circuit:

Superfast delivery – we can install a circuit within 25 working days of receiving an order – that’s about a fifth of the time it takes to install a typical fibre line. Cost savings over fibre circuits – Wireless is based upon a fixed price model, unlike fibre for which price is dependent upon location. The further you are from a fibre access point, the more expensive and disruptive a subterranean line becomes. Wireless is location agnostic because the data is carried between two points via an aerial signal which doesn’t lose performance over distance. Its good news all round.

But is it less secure?

No, in fact a wireless IP connection is arguably more secure than a fibre connection. Wireless uses proprietary frequency-hopping algorithms that are unique to the customer’s ingress and egress points to and from the Metronet (UK) Network. The algorithms are completely alien to any equipment that isn’t part of the network, making the interpretation of data being carried between two points of presence impossible.

On top of that, encryption is also used all of which makes wireless the most secure way to transmit data.

Is it less dependable than fibre?

Absolutely not. Because Metronet (UK) owns its own network, we’re able to offer an unrivalled service level commitment of 99.95% uptime, as well as a 4-hour fix service. Metronet (UK) has only ever used the latest and best network technology. We constantly monitor every aspect of our network to ensure that it performs reliably, always.

Our staff to analyse unusual events, diagnose problems promptly and take corrective action remotely – usually before customers are affected or aware of any network errors.
